Why are the old ways of Witchcraft now ignored? ?

Everywhere I turn now-a-days it seems that the old ways are being willfully ignored, and in some cases changed out of all recognition. Why is this? Why do people profess to be Wiccan and then prove that they don't have the first idea of what this actually means. Seriously, I am very confused about this.
