Sims 2 not working on my vista laptop. help?

i have sims 2 Delux and university installed. i downloaded teh university patch, set myself to the administrator, and my computer is in compatibility mode. it gets to the Creat a New Student page and i can name them but it freezes on selecting a face on step 2. the disks are fine they worked on my old laptop. any help?
