I believe that you were just demonstrating celluar respiration and photosynthesis. The point was to show that plants do both. The reason why the indicator turned color is because by adding CO2 to the test tube, it created Carbonic acid. Cellular respiration releases CO2, photosynthesis produces glucose and oxygen.
