Is it possible for a human to get sick from a dog infected with "kennel cough"?

Coincidentally, both I and my 22 month old son have fallen ill since Leah has been sick (which is 4 weeks now). We are both suffering from a dry cough, chest congestion and my son is now weezing. I don't think we've contracted kennel cough but perhaps we came in contact with the virus that subsequently triggered a reaction within us??
